Wearing a full lambswool coat, the German Rex is the oldest known breed of curly-coated cat.  It first appeared in 19746 in the home of Dr. Scheuer-Karpin but was actually developped from a stray adopted by breeders in 1951. Curly-coated kittens were obtained through through crosses with the Cornish Rex.  This proved that the two breeds have the same gene responsible for the mutation. The German Rex is a very rare cat.

The head is rounded and it is very broad between the ears. The cheeks are well-developped, the nose has a slight break at the base, the massive chin is strong and the curly whiskers are shorter than usual. The eyes are of medium-size, well-spaced and wide-open. The colour of the eyes must be uniform, luminous and it must correspond to that of the coat.

The medium-size body is solid, muscular, but not massive or heavy. The rounded chest is powerful and the back is straight from the shoulders to the croup. The paws are slender and moderately long. They are well-developped and they are slightly oval with a rounded shape. The tail is moderately long, thick at the base and tapering to a rounded tip.

The short coat is velvety at the touch, soft and very silky. It must be curly or wavy. It is curly on the entire body, and it is longer than that of the Cornish Rex.  All colours are recognized, except chocolate, lilac and colourpoint.

The German Rex is an active but patient cat. It is even-tempered, friendly toward other cats, and very affectionate toward their owner.
